Colt

The news of the attack in Mrs. Keelin’s room spreads through the academy quickly. At first Colt assumed it was the rumor mill that had attached Gabby’s name to it, but he soon realized her name was the only one being bandied about.

Gabby attacked a teacher and a student. Over a book. And then she ran away.

Colt leans against the wall, tucking himself further into the shadows of the little enclave he’s chosen to wait in. The administration building is across the wide expanse of floor, a tinkling water fountain in the center. If what the students are saying is true, then Gabby will be coming by this way shortly. On her way to see the Dean.

Because her time at the academy is at an end.

Fate must’ve been wrong. His destiny isn’t tied to hers. She’s far too erratic, a loose cannon as humans like to say. What’s more, she’s a magnet for trouble. These stones Fate spoke of won’t be found, no matter how vital she believed they were.

And yet, the thought tugs at his chest. Almost painfully. And his mind rebels. He is tied to this girl, somehow. He can feel it in his marrow.

But she can’t stay. Not after what she did.

And he can’t leave.

Which means none of this makes sense.

Two students wander past, gossiping that the attack was probably a product of drug use. Colt almost snorts, but refrains himself. He’s cloaked himself within the shadows of the alcove, not wanting to be seen. Bringing attention to himself will have people wondering where the sound came from.

Gabby doesn’t strike him as the sort to use drugs. Being supernatural is the best explanation for all of this, especially after he saw flashes of white, silver-tipped wings. But the research he’s done suggests otherwise. Gabby was born human. She has a birth certificate. No angel has one of those. They bring their true forms with them to Earth, unlike demons who must possess a human vessel. Colt’s always envied that about them.

Although, there are other supernatural species with wings. He’s heard that some dragons have silver wings, although he hasn’t seen one for decades.

Colt clenches his jaw. All this conjecture is getting him nowhere. He needs answers.

He straightens when he sees her enter the foyer. Gabby crosses the length, then passes the fountain. Her chin is held high, but her shoulders are low. He can sense her heart thundering in her chest.

She’s scared.

And yet she walks with determined steps, willing to face the consequences of her actions he notes with grudging respect. No wonder he’s so fascinated with her. She’s a woman of contrasts and contradictions.

And mysteries galore.

Gabby raps on the door, waits a moment and Colt hears the faint voice of the Dean.

“Come in.”

With a fortifying breath, she does, closing the door behind her.

Colt finds he’s no longer leaning against the wall. He’s upright, alert. His gaze locked on those doors.

As if he cares what happens next. He frowns. As if he wants to go in there and stand beside her as she faces the Dean.
